Who is Your Mainstay?
In recent conversation, I kept saying the word “mainstay” but wasn’t sure why. I understood the word to be the main source of something, but I wasn’t sure of the true definition. When looking up the meaning, I found it to be, “a person or thing on which something else is based or depends; the most important part of something, providing support for everything else.” (similar to an anchor). With this knowledge, I understood more of the accuracy of what I was feeling in my spirit.
Many in the body of Christ have leaned on their spiritual leader(s) as their mainstay for keeping things afloat in their lives. They have displaced the Father by desiring to lean more on the leader than leaning on God, Himself. Displaced [take over the place, position, or role of (someone or something; cause (something) to move from its proper or usual place].
When the Spiritual leaders guide them to safety, the safety is short lived. Why? The true connection that is needed between God and the person is not present. Therefore, the person finds themselves going around the same mountain over and over or deviate from the path altogether.
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
Notice, the scriptures above would suggest for us to remain in Jesus alone... Spiritual leaders are placed in our lives to help us grow and remain in Christ. They are not there to take the place of God. Up to a certain point, the leaders’ hands are tied, and it falls solely on the person and what they want to do.
Lately, I’ve found myself saying, “What do you want? What do you want to do?” as I think about ministering to others around me. If God is your mainstay, you will often find yourself running to Him and seeking His face for yourself. You will desire His Will over your life as you make a decision to develop a personal relationship with Him. You will come to hear His voice as you learn to sit in His presence. You will see God for who He really is and you would learn to lean on Him and love Him for the goodness He’s placed in your life.
When times get hard, your leader will be there to support you with a listening ear, encouraging you to keep going. God desires to be our everything. Without Him, we have no security in the now and in the after. We must learn to lean on God for all that we need. We must desire Him over all things. Take some time to consider what’s at stake and who’s the only one that can get us through the rest of our days.
“Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us. Selah”
“There is none like God, O Jeshurun, who rides through the heavens to your help, through the skies in his majesty. 27 The eternal God is your dwelling place, and underneath are the everlasting arms.”
